We interviewed Sally Montague from Sally Montague

What was your inspiration for the salon?
It was important to us that we kept the original features of the building. It is a listed building, positioned on the oldest street in Derby, so we wanted to work with its heritage rather than against it, to offer a unique and luxurious salon experience. The building was initially an Iron Mongers, which provides a great conversational piece when the team is talking to their clients.

Who is your role model?
I’ve always followed and admired Robert Lobetta’s work; his creativity and flair has inspired me since I was 14-years-old. Karren Brady is also another person I admire, due to her sheer determination and hard work. She’s a real go-getter.

Best moment? (customer base/ award winning/ promotion/ messages/recommendation)?
It’s been such a great career with countless amazing moments, from winning the Derbyshire Business Person of the Year award, to marking 30 years in business last year. Having four individual teams get through to the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy Grand Final, all in the same night, was also a great moment, and seeing my team and my daughters flourish in the company is rewarding.

Funniest hairdressing moment?
There have been so many, but years ago, when I was doing a hair show, as I came on stage to take my bow, I noticed there was a vase on the edge of the stage. I kicked it by mistake and it flew into the audience!

Best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
‘You’re only as good as your last haircut’. It’s been fantastic advice and encourages you to strive to work to your maximum potential every day.

Whats the most important quality you look for in someone joining your team?
I look for personality, creativity and skill among other things, but I like to see that they’re a team player and can slot straight into a busy salon team.

What would you like to be known for?
A strong woman in business, with a group of six independent salons, that offer impeccable service in luxurious surroundings. I still work alongside my team every day in the salons, so I hope they’d remember me for being an understanding and enthusiastic mentor.
