Styles that withhold the Autumn winds

The messy high bun

The messy high bun is the perfect relaxed tousled look which withholds the wind for hours. What really makes this style special is the loose layer of hair curled round the head for relaxed perfection.

Pull your hair into a loose and relaxed ponytail, high on the crown of the head and pull out some front strands to frame the face. Carefully separate the different sections of the hair and start teasing the sections that lack volume. Bring all of these sections together and carefully wrap them into a messy but incredibly beautiful bun that will last for hours. Add a touch of hairspray to make sure everything stays in place.

Pulled back braids

Pulled back side braids are a great look to pull hair away from the face, stopping flyways in the wind.

At the front of your face, use your fingers to create a two-inch section of hair on the left. Braid the section. Secure the braid with a mini hair elastic. Repeat on the other side. For the look of a thicker braid, gently tug apart each braid to loosen it using your fingers. Section off the top of your hair and put it in a hair clip to keep it out of the way and pull to the back of the head later. Bring both braids around to the back of your head and secure them together with an elastic band. Take down the top section of hair and secure it into a half-up ponytail with a mini hair elastic at about the same spot as the elastic holding the braids together. Secure a bobby pin into the top elastic and thread it through the bottom elastic on the braids, then push it through to secure both elastics flat on the head.

Fish tail side braid

The fish tail side braid is a classic and elegant look that will last for hours and a style that continuously looks better the more the wind blows.

Start by dividing your hair into a side parting and take the whole length of your hair over to one side. Take a small piece of hair from the outside of one of the two main sections and bring it to the inside of the opposite section. Repeat with the hair from the outside of the other section and pull tight. Keep using this method until you reach the end and finish your plait by tying with a small plastic band or piece of ribbon. Lastly, pull out some small strands of hair from the plait to give the fishtail a more modern, textured look and fluffy style.

Lazy crown braids

Tight crown braids meet their lazy match with this beautiful look. The messier they get in the wind, the more volume and textured they become.

With a pintail comb, mark out a strong centre part, then clip on the side clean away. With the other section of hair left out, pick up 3 strands of hair at the front of the hairline and French braid all the way down the centre of the section. Pick hair up from the scalp each time you plait the hair over. Repeat on the other side. Once the two braids are secured, start loosening and teasing the braids from the bottom and work this technique up the head to the front of the crown.

How to get the windswept look without the wind:

Post-shower, towel dry your mane roughly 50 percent dry and liberally spritz a texturizing spray. Volume is best achieved by blow-drying upside-down, or by creating deep side parts and drying while pulling hair away from the head, focusing the dryer on the roots first and moving down to the ends. When hair is halfway dry, work straightening balm or serum through. Take sections of hair and selectively round-brush with the hair dryer – this will give the hair bounce and more volume. Using finishing wax, work it into the roots and take chunks of hair, twisting the balm through the ends. If you want, use an iron to straighten some wavy parts or to give those wavy parts more defined curls.
