Tan or Tangoed? Should You Fake It?

Is your fake tan more of a citrus orange than golden brown? Have you stopped or avoided using sunbeds, because you're concerned about the potential damage they can do to skin and want a safer option? Do you find it difficult to select a fake tan product that doesn't leave a crime scene image of you on the sheet the next morning!

Many bronzed gods and goddesses are deserting their sunlamps, amid renewed concern that regular exposure to UV rays ages the skin, causing sagging and wrinkles. The damage done to skin can be seen by special camera images and the risk of skin cancer also increases. Sunbeds might look like futuristic, all embracing warm cocoons, giving a faster tan with no white bits
but in reality, they are costly time machines, accelerating the age of your skin far beyond its normal years. The truth is that a suntan fades, but skin damage from UV tanning does not.

Faking It

Approximately 24% of British 16-24 year-olds have used a sunbed; they're especially popular before going on holiday and through the summer months. There's nothing quite like having tanned skin to make you feel better about yourself. You feel healthier, slimmer and able to wear anything, bright colours, whites and blacks all seem to contrast so well against glowing, honey skin. A large number of young men are also using sunbeds on a regular basis. The 'tanned' look has become so addictive, that the term "tanorexics" has emerged to describe those with a 360O tan, 365 days a year!

Recommendation from Dr. Annabel Bentley, assistant medical director, BUPA Group: "If people are considering using sunbeds they should be aware of the risks as well as the perceived benefits before going ahead. However, if people do want to look bronzed, the good news is that fake tanning lotions offer great results without any UV radiation - this is one occasion when 'faking it' really is the better option."

How Do They Work?
Fake tanning lotions and sprays are a popular and safer alternative to spending time in the sun or under sunbeds to get a tan. Most of them use non-toxic substances that react with cells in the outermost layer of the skin and produce a brown pigment (colour) called melanoidin. The outer skin cells are already dead, and are shed as the skin constantly renews itself. This is why fake tan needs to be regularly re-applied to maintain the colour. The fake tan doesn't go beyond the outer layer of skin and therefore isn't absorbed into the body. There are no known dangers of using tanning lotions, other than they can sometimes cause an allergic reaction. It is always a good idea to test the product on a small area of skin first, before applying it to the rest of your body.

Fake tanning preparations have come a long way since the days of uncontrollable streaking, strong, unpleasant smells and waiting hours for an unrealistic result. The choice in method of application has grown in response to consumer demand, with creams, gels, aerosols and spray guns all adding plenty of firepower to your beauty arsenal. Here are some of the latest lines we've added to our online store at UKHairdressers:

HE-SHI
As its name implies, He-Shi is designed to appeal to both men and women. He-Shi is an Express Liquid tan/gel, which tans on contact with the skin. Unlike most fake tans you can actually see it going on, so you know instantly that no parts have been left uncovered. The result is no streaking and no white bits!
He-She is suitable for all skin types, it will darken overnight, however if a deeper colour is required, just apply a further coat. This can be applied immediately after the first coat has dried out, or the next day. Leave a minimum of 5-7 hours before showering, but overnight is best. Some surface bronzer will wash off in the first shower. After this He-Shi will not wash off, it will just fade naturally like a real tan and will last approximately 4 or 5 days.

He-Shi Gift Pack
Attractive, money saving Gift Pack. Includes the He-Shi Express Liquid Tan, He-Shi Facial Gel, He-Shi Golden Glitter Spray and He-Shi Tanning Mitt.
