handbag.com resident hair expert Leo Bancroft shows you how to perfect the tricky technique of straightening your hair.

It’s all about dividing hair with clips and working through in sections. Use the point of a long clip or pointed end of a styling comb to get a line of hair and then clip it up. Leaving a manageable amount of hair below it – see the demonstration video.

Straighten the under sections of your hair first and work up to the top layers. How many times you make a line and clip it up will depend on hair thickness and length.

You can work with one clip at a time, or if you prefer use several and release layers as you straighten.

USEFUL TIPS

• Choose a straightener that’s right for your hair type. Thick or coarse hair will need one that can reach a higher temperature 220°C than fine or brittle hair 210ºC.

• Apply a thermal protect product before you start, this will help keep your hair in good condition – essential if you use straighteners frequently.

• A finishing gloss spray or hair spray after straightening will give a sleek look and protect against humidity and the elements.

• Always use a heat proof mat on a safe, flat surface while your straighteners are heating up or cooling off.
Comb through the individual sections before you straighten to help achieve a sleek finish.
Place the straightener plates on the hair, not too close to the scalp, don’t clamp or grip too tight. Then slowly move the plates smoothly down the length of the hair.
