In
praise of the humble carrot.
Carrots are a much under-rated food but are really an
excellent addition to as many meals as possible. Apart
from the usual boiled method with a little butter added,
shred a few into all your salads, cut them into strips
for mid-meal snacking or indulge in delicious carrot cake.
Carrots get their bright carrot colour from Carotenoids,
pigment antioxidants that are powerful quenchers of damaging
free radicals. The most well know Carotenoid in carrots
is the antioxidant beta - carotene, which converts in
the body to Vitamin A. Carrots also contain the antioxidant
Vitamin E. So all in all they're good through and through.

Ever
wondered why you crave something sweet mid-afternoon?
The desire for a cake or biscuits mid-afternoon or mid-morning
is due to a drop in your blood sugar levels which leads to a
craving for a 'pick me up' If you're dieting, this can make
your cravings more pronounced. To combat them, eat little and
often - aiming to refuel every 4 hours. Have a small snack at
these times, such as an apple with nuts and seeds, which can
lead to a balanced blood-sugar level. The idea is to catch the
crash before it happens. Try substituting your cup of tea or
coffee with one of the low fat |
chocolate
sachets, which may at least help you to feel you've had something
sweet.
