JO HANSFORDís illustrious career began back in the glory days of Vidal Sassoon. It was, she says: "a most magical time... the absolute best time to start a career in hairdressing.... I feel so privileged to have been part of that whole exciting scene."
Since those early days, JO HANSFORD has worked worldwide with Vidal Sassoon, heading his colour department for a number of years before joining Daniel Galvin as a partner in his colour salon. In 1993 she opened her own colour salon in Mayfair where she further established her reputation as "the best tinter on the planet" (American Vogue). She built her business from an initial staff of eight "I couldnít envisage a time when we would ever need the downstairs area of the salon", to what it is today: "we now are 53 staff, with an Academy across the road, and there are times when we just donít have enough chairs!" She has been involved with stars of film, television and stage shows. David Jason can often be seen sitting in the colour room, hair covered in tint, totally happy to be there. "We thought of having a VIP room," says Jo. "But so far it hasnít been a problem. Anyway, all my clients are VIPís as far as I am concerned."
Jo has worked with many famous heads in film and television including David Jason particularly throughout his career as the face of Del Boy and Frost. Amanda Redman is also a regular visitor to the Mayfair salon both professionally and privately Ė Jo has turned Amanda many shades from blonde to brunette and back again for her ever changing parts in leading television dramas. Yasmin Le Bon has been a loyal client over a number of years and most recently, top model Liberty Ross turned to Jo when she had to flaunt multi-coloured tresses for a Vogue Magazine photoshoot. Band members of the Corrs Ė Andrea and Caroline can be seen sitting side by side having hair pampering sessions and the up and coming group Alice Band are also regular clients. Few hairdressers have had the pleasure of working with so many celebrity heads and maintain them them as loyal and regular clients.
In a business where someoneís looks can either make or break them, the many celebrities who regularly entrust their hair to Jo include: Camilla Parker Bowles, Cate Blanchett, Yasmin Le Bon, Elizabeth Hurley, Amanda Redman, Caroline Aherne, Liberty Ross, Andrea and Caroline Corr , Claire Goose, Fiona Phillips, Ann Davies and a host of top models.
Jo Hansford has succeeded in what is primarily a male dominated industry. Her entrepreneurial spirit makes her a great role model for other young, career-minded females. Without doubt, it is her superb eye for colour, her strength of character and her friendly and down-to-earth approach that has ensured Jo her place as THE leading female hairdresser in the UK today.
