 Lauren asks:

I have a couple of questions to ask as I can’t find reliable answers online. 1. I’ve heard that you can add mousse to the roots of dry hair to add volume, will this make the hair greasy? If not, what’s the best way to use it? 2. Is texturing spray the same sort of thing as ’sea salt spray’? If not, what is it? 3. I have naturally curly hair (the curls are not too tight but they do ringlet) & I have GHD sea salt spray. Will this help add a thickness to my hair? and if so, what’s the best way for me to use this product to create thick, curls?

Darren MessiasAnswered By:

Ok firstly applying mousse to dry hair can make the hair at the roots greasy so I would apply it to damp towel dried hair.

Texturising spay and sea salt sprays are very similar. They both will create a textured casual look and the best way to apply it is the same as above but try to let the hair dry as naturally as possible.

 Min asks:

I have a round face, I am Asian, Italian and Lebanese so my hair is thick, wavy, oily at the roots, below my shoulders, layered and can get frizzy. I had short layers but they all grew out so I will be getting a new haircut soon. I was thinking of getting a short layered choppy haircut more at the top so there’s more volume there and then thinning out towards the bottom with dark red peak a boo highlights. Probably without a bang because when I did have bangs before they grew out, they would kind of wave outwards and then go in. I don’t know but I’m tired of it so I’m going to stick with just maybe trimming them. What I’m worried about is, would it look good or not for my face structure? Because I have a very round face. I’m not trying to cut it short maybe just trimmed 2 inches or so. But also I wash my hair everyday because of the oil but my hair is still healthy but by the end of the day my roots are oily again, but I think that is because I’m always playing with it.

To get the added volume you require on the crown just have your hair internally skimmed with a razor.

This will introduce internal layers that will add style support and make styling much easier.

If you have nice long hair DO NOT get it cut KEEP IT.

If your roots go greasy this could be down to the shampoo and conditioner you are using.

Some tips.

If you wash your hair every day then follow this routine:

1. Wash your hair once and only lightly massage your scalp in the process.

2. After finishing rinsing out the shampoo carry on with a cool or cold rinse if you can stand it this will aid in slowing down your sebum/oil production.

3. Use a light spray in or leave in conditioner and only apply mid lengths to ends keeping it away from your roots.

4. Style as normal but avoid any oily styling products as they will only add to the problem.

 Alice asks:

My hair felt very damaged and dry. So I have for the last six months used shampoos and conditioners for dry and damaged hair (I have been colouring it for a few years) but now my ends (and 10 cm up) are almost fine but the roots gets so greasy so fast. HAVE to wash it every day.

Should I change my shampoo?

Darren MessiasAnswered By:

The two important things to remember are to use a shampoo specifically for oily hair/scalp and use a repair or hydrate conditioner on the ends.

Also make sure when you wash your hair it is with luke warm water not hot, as this makes the scalp produce oil quicker.

 Stacey asks:

I sort of have a few challenges all in one which is frustrating! I have very fine hair, I have a double crown and my hair gets greasy very easily too. I wear my hair short because when I try to grow it, it tends to get a bit straggly, limp and again greasy. The double crown doesn’t help because when I wake up in the morning it’s sticking up all over the place and when trying to grow it I still have to wash it and blow dry it every single day. I’d love to have feminine, long luscious hair - is there any way I can achieve this? Or will I always have short hair? And if I will always have short hair that’s fine but how do I combat the double crown and grease! I feel so yucky and not like a lady at all! Though it does look great when freshly washed and blow dried, but disastrous the next morning! Thanks heaps for your help!

Ok let’s try to sort the oily hair out first. Firstly invest in a specific oily scalp shampoo and always wash your hair with luke warm water and not hot is this makes the scalp produce more oil.

As far as the double crown is concerned I’m afraid that will always be a problem with short styles but just as a suggestion you could consider Racoon International’s hair extensions to make your hair thicker and also the length you’ve been after.

 Georgina asks:

I have very thick wavy hair and I really love it but hate it at the same time. It is a nightmare to style. I struggle to straighten it fast, my glamour curls won’t stay in and my hair won’t stay crimped even for 5 minutes. My hair is naturally oily but I cannot use hair spray because it makes my hair greasy especially with being a teenager what could I do or use to make my hair stay in the style I want for longer.

Why not try a very soft perm that gives you a wave to your hair then maybe it would be easier also to enhance the curl using a tong or heated rollers. It would also help to dry the hair a little leaving it less oily.

 Deb asks:

My son is 16 and has thick dark curly hair, he is really struggling with greasy hair and we’re not sure what are the best products to use, can you recommend a good dry shampoo for in between washing and also should he be using a mousse for curly hair or would it best be left without because its so greasy.

Lee StaffordAnswered By:

Thick curly hair can get greasy at the roots and it is important to choose styling products that will help your son’s hair look healthy. Try my Ddouble blow mousse which I have specifically designed to be non sticky or greasy whilst stopping hair from going crispy - like so many mousses do! This will help to give the curls volume. Simply apply a handful of the mousse throughout the hair and leave to dry naturally or blow dry. For in between washes, my Poker Straight Dry Shampoo is perfect. It absorbs excess oil and gives hair a real boots - just spray on to roots from about a foot away and rub away any excess powder for instantly freshened hair!

 Kathy asks:

I am 40’s. With square face, over weight, and extremely straight hair. I have to wash it everyday both because it gets greasy very quickly but the main problem I have just moved to a very hot country and I am finding my hair is always just stuck to my head and neck, with sweat. It is not long enough by any means to tie up. I just feel horrible all the time. I want a short style that I can wash and leave and if going out, just put a bit of wax on. My daughter keeps saying that I cannot have anything short because it won’t suit me. I keep telling her that having hair stuck to my head does not suit me either. I went to local salon recently for a hair cut and picked a picture like Victoria Beckham and ended up with a pageboy. I am back in the UK in July and will get it done when I am over, so nothing gets lost in translation but please tell me what style I can go for that will make me feel feminine again, even with wet hair.

Being in a hot country can be a nightmare if your hair does have a tendency to go greasy! The best thing would be to have some colour through your hair because this tends to prevent your hair going greasy as quick. Highlights would probably be the best thing!

 Beth asks:

I love my new fringe but on nights out it tends to soak up the sweat really easily is there anything I can do or any products I can use to stop this?

Calum TierneyAnswered By:

There isn’t a great deal you can do aside from carry a "dry shampoo" product with you and spray it in when your fringe looks greasy! Or stay in!

I think the dry shampoo will be great!

 Kyle asks:

I’ve had problems with my hair for as long as I can remember and it has stunted my self esteem greatly. I have medium long brown straight hair and it has always been dry, coarse, frizzy and unmanageable. My hair has lots of volume, but mostly at the sides and the individual strands seem quite thin. Even though it’s dry it gets fat and greasy surprisingly quick when I apply different kinds of wax. My hair also looks damaged in bright lights. I’ve spent a fortune trying to get my hair to look nice, and I’ve asked hairdressers and friends but nothing seems to work. I use expensive shampoos and have tried many that are for dry hair and the same goes for conditioners. Do you have any suggestions on what I could do?

Gary SunderlandAnswered By:

With medium long brown hair you should be able to get whatever you want. The greasiness will come from too much wax being used or the wrong product. Long hair takes time to get it to look right and TLC is the key. Try using SP (Wella) for dry coarse hair with the conditioner to go with it (ask your stylist). If you like a straight smooth healthy look then invest in some FHI platform irons that will help reduce your frizz and keep your hair smooth and shiny. They will definitely reduce your volume and keep your hair condition healthier than using other products. Ensure if you use FHI irons to move slowly down each section in what we call "one Pass" as this allows the NANO Fuzeion to make your hair smooth and healthy looking.

 Laurian asks:

I am 14 and I was my hair everyday, about a week ago when I washed it there is a sticky reside left in my hair, and it looks greasy and feels sticky and disgusting. I thought that maybe I wasn’t washing my hair properly so I had my sister try and it still felt sticky, I looked on the internet and they said to try baking soda mixed with shampoo, it didn’t work, someone else also said to try vinegar, again it didn’t work. Now I don’t know what to do, what is it and why won’t it go away. Do you know anything that might take it away?

Gary SunderlandAnswered By:

Some times this can be caused by hard water in your area. What I would recommend is to use a professional shampoo like SP from Wella. Visit your local salon and get some advice on the correct shampoo for your hair. At first try it without conditioner as it may be that what you are using is too heavy for your hair at the moment. If your hair feels "clean" then the next time try using a light conditioner from SP. These are great shampoos and conditioners and I am sure that they will resolve your problem.
