 Alison asks:

I have always had long, thick hair but in the last few years due to illness and medication I have only half the hair I had. Despite using thickening products it is now starting to look noticeably thin. I would like some ideas of styles to make it look thicker. I am 39, have a round face and thanks to the medication (steroids) I am slightly overweight. The good news is I’ll be off the steroids and on something else which won’t make me lose my hair and put weight on shortly, so hopefully my hair will grow back. Currently, my hair is about 6 inches below my shoulder with some long layers. I have a semi permanent dye a few shades darker and warmer than my natural colour.

The best way to make your hair look and feel thicker would be to go for more of a just above the shoulders bob style, with just a few long layers in. The bob style will definitely give you the effect of thicker hair, while the long layers will help you achieve some body and volume.

 Vanesse asks:

I have naturally wavy hair. It’s not frizzy. I’ve never had a problem with frizz, which is what many people recommend satin or silk pillowcases for. Satin pillowcases seem to make my waves disappear. What is the best kind of pillowcase to keep the waves in my hair while I sleep?

I hate having to shampoo it every day to revive the waves.

Always use curl and body enhancing products.

 Carl asks:

I am one of those that hate to get my hair cut regularly and avoid it as much as possible, I know and read that people say that if you cut your hair regularly avoid heat and products then it will be amazing but I am a guy that likes to grow my hair and have it quite long (For a guy) and want a full and thick look- currently I think my hairs not in the greatest shape although when I wash it daily I am currently using Tresemme 24hr body because it apparently helps build volume. I feel it is quite thin though specially the fringe I notice that when I do go to hairdressers my fringe ends up being less than it was regarding coverage - I cannot seem to get a fuller fringe anymore where as when I first started growing my hair this length I could pretty much cover the full forehead with it then after I decided to go to a proper hair stylist to style it (as it wasn’t really styled after it grew a lot more) I just seemed to start getting less of a fringe and now its no where near to fully covering my forehead.

As time goes on our body changes as does our hair. It maybe the case it becomes thinner, greasier, fuller, thicker or dry and frizzy. This needs to be accepted in how we grow and change. As for your fringe problem if it’s possible ask your stylist for a fuller heavier fringe this should become thicker and fuller. A good hair cut leaving you with a style (not a trim) should help

 Karen asks:

I am in my late thirties and would love to have long hair. I have a long thin face, and my hair is very fine and flyaway. I have a smallish forehead, but have a long nose. I always have my hair layered and cut just below my jaw line. Is there a style that I could have that is suitable for my face shape and age that, gives volume, but is longer? I would love to have flowing locks, but it tends to just hang and cling to my face as it grows, making my face look long and tired. Any suggestions would be most welcome. My hair has a slight wave in it.

Longer hair does not usually work well with a long face shape as it tends to make the face shape longer. Again with your hair being fine the longer and heavier it gets the more it will cling to your face.

My advice would be to keep it slightly shorter in length and keep the layers so that you can achieve volume and body.

If you do want to try it longer then definitely keep some layers in but perhaps consider trying a very light body perm to give you body and width.

 Tammy asks:

I would like to send you a picture and have an expert tell me what type of hairstyle fits me more. I’ve had long hair for too long and want to cut it short. Please give me this opportunity to send you a picture of me and to receive an opinion from an expert. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Thanks for your question and photo.

I wouldn’t cut too much off the length as it really suits your face shape.

Having said this if you are after a bit of a change what I would suggest perhaps having a sweeping fringe/bang put in and having some framing layers around the sides to add softness around your face.

I would also introduce some more long layers throughout and have about 2-3 inches cut off the length, all this will create more body and give you the option to wear your hair curly or smooth depending on your mood.

 Louise asks:

I have dark blonde fine hair and an oval/long face. What style would best suit? I seem to spend my life asking the hairdressers who just suggests the same thing. Long bob with bits cut around my face. I have had that since I was 11! I have a high forehead and my hair looks a bit thin at the scalp.

Just would love a style that looks chunky and fun!

It’s always hard to advice without seeing someone face to face but by the sounds of what you have described you could try having the back graduated and then sloping down at the sides. Then also have some long layers cut throughout to create a little body. This basically is a graduated layered bob, and I would also suggest keeping some form of fringe also.

 Maria asks:

The fringe of my hair has gone very thin, I have used many products but feel I have been wasting my money, the more I am worrying about it, the worse it is getting!

The first thing to do is stop worrying- the thinning of your hair can be easily remedied, without going to drastic measures. Aside from taking supplements and maintaining a health balanced lifestyle, just follow my 4 easy steps to doubling the volume of your hair instantly- no expensive treatments needed.
  1. After washing your hair rub a generous amount (about a tennis ball size amount) of Lee Stafford Ddouble Blow Mousse into your hair, which should help give you that root lift and movement that you need in your fringe and the main body of your hair to create added volume and thickness.
  2. Then as you blow dry you fringe be careful not to use too high a heat setting as this can dry out and damage your hair thus adding to the thinning problem.
  3. Be sure to vary the heat and wave of the dryer so that you don’t concentrate the air flow on one section for too long.
  4. Why not also try using my Lee Stafford Hair Growth Treatment in between shampooing and conditioning your hair. This product has a soothing formulation which reduces irritation caused to the hair by day to day products and moisturises the scalp. Massage a generous scoop of the treatment into your roots and leave for 5 minutes. Rinse out and condition as normal.

How long does it take hair to grow back thick after getting it thinned out

This will all depend on how quick your hair tends to grow, everybody’s hair will be different.

 Chelsea asks:

I have naturally straight and wavy hair, straight on the top layers and wavy on the bottom layers. Its length is about 3 inches past my shoulders, though I have really short layers also. I tease it and round brush the top layers to give it lots of body and a very airy look. Its base color is brown, but I also have really blonde peak a boo highlights throughout my hair and two red streaks in the midst of my fringe and face frame. Now, I plan to dye my entire hair blonde, however I do not know what shade to choose. Also, I want to put red peak a boo highlights throughout it. My dilemma is first, I do not want to put the peak a boo’s in the same places, they are in chunks that you can only see amidst my tease at the moment, but I do not know what to do with them?

Second, I want to put another colour in my hair also, just I do not know what color and where. Third, sick of my hair shape I was hoping for a more sweet look, rather than this ice cream cone shape, though I still would like to tease it. Also, I will not go shorter longer or the same length are the only options. I know this is a lot and if you can help I would be so thankful.

Wow you certainly want to do a lot!!

Obviously it is very difficult to give the correct advice over an email without seeing your hair, face shape, skin tones etc. What I would suggest is booking a free consultation with a hairdresser before committing to anything, this way you will be more likely to get the end result you are after.

My concern regarding the colour is that you already have colour in your hair and going blonde may require you having some form with bleach which will dry your hair out, and I would want to make sure your hair is strong enough to withstand this process.

 Hani asks:

I have got very bad frizz in my hair it actually developed after my use of Isotretinoin for 8 months for acne cure. I regularly use a good shampoo and a conditioner for dry frizzy hair but it isn’t helping me much. No hairstyle is visible in my hair due to this frizz. Could you please tell me some product that is the ultimate to take care of frizz!

Every other week add a little drop of baby oil into a warm bath. Bathe for a while and soak your whole hair in the water. Do not rinse out. When you get out the bath, towel dry your body and hair and comb through leave to dry naturally. This at first will feel strange because you will be left with a residue all over especially your hair and you may not feel clean, however this will add moisture not only too your now frizzy hair but also your body. Do this for about a month.
