Healthy Hair from Within

We all know that healthy hair is essentially 'dead' at its length but hair is of course attached to a living reproducing structure - the root. The root is situated just below the surface of the scalp - living cells within the root produce hair and, if not properly nourished their ability to make hair is badly affected. Hair strands are also attached to tiny muscles - making hair stand on end for example when we are cold or scared.

No one nutrient is responsible for the health of the hair - a variety of nutrients are needed to interact with each other to maintain growth and health.

Vitamin A ~ needed to enable cells to divide and replicate normally. A lack of it can lead to dry hair and skin, too much can cause inflammation of the follicle, so rather than introducing a supplement try to eat a good portion of orange fruit or leafy vegetables and vitamin A is also present in whole milk, margarine and eggs.

Vitamin B ~ lack of vitamin B can lead to oily hair conditions. The B vitamins are found from different sources and all are necessary for healthy hair.

B2 ~ found in meat, poultry, milk, eggs, breakfast cereal and brown rice.

Niacin ~ meat, bread and potatoes all provide niacin.

Panthotheric Acid ~ helps keep the hair follicle in good condition, egg yolks, peanuts and wheatgerm are a good source.

Biotin ~ a severe lack of this vitamin can lead to dramatic hair loss, an excellent supply can be found in nuts and pulses.

Vitamin C ~ Lack of vitamin C can cause excessively dry skin and hair ~ plenty of fruit and vegetables will ensure you get a good supply.

Minerals ~ minerals and trace elements are also important to hairs health. Copper is needed for hairs structure and can be found in milk, bread and green vegetables. A lack of zinc can lead to hair loss ~ oysters are the richest source of zinc but its more practically found in peas, pulses, haricot beans, butter and kidney.

Essential Fatty Acids ~ obviously we all need to cut down on saturated fats in our diets, cakes, biscuits etc., but its important to include polyunsaturated fats in our diet too. Vegetable oil and Evening Primrose oil are know to improve dry skin and hair problems especially itchy, flaky scalps.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is not only good for your body, but necessary for the health and beauty of your hair!

Did You Know?

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know -
That true semi~permanents contain no peroxide and therefore can't lighten hair.
They are best used to add tone to mousey hair or bring out the natural highlights of your own shade.

Is your hair really in good condition?

Brush hair gently with a really clean brush. If strands have broken off rather than shed from the roots your hair is probably dry and brittle, it may often lack shine and softness.

Remedy
Always use a conditioning shampoo and deep conditioner. Cut down on blow-drying and additional products until condition improves.

If your hair looks flat after brushing it may be lank or greasy. You may feel you need to wash it frequently and that your style drops easily.

Remedy
Use a gentle shampoo and light conditioner especially formulated for greasy hair. Don't over massage as this will stimulate follicles to produce more sebum.

If your hair has split ends your hair may not necessarily be dry all over, just at the ends. You may notice that the ends look frizzy even when you've blow-dried it smooth.

Remedy
Get a trim and keep up with regular trims! This type of hair is often prone to splitting, especially if you're a little heavy-handed with the hairbrush. Always make sure you comb your conditioner right down to the ends and use an intensive conditioner once in a while on the ends along. If you blow-dry, use a blow drying lotion on the ends before you start.

Colour and Permed?

  • Make sure hair is in tip~top condition before having either one or both chemical processes.
  • Wait at least 2 weeks before having colour on newly permed hair as a perm can 'lift' your hair colour.
  • A long lasting semi-permanent is preferable to a permanent colour on permed hair. New semi-permanents on the market can last up to 24 washes.
  • Try to avoid bleaching permed hair. If you want highlights opt for tint-based ones.
  • Protect your newly permed or coloured hair by using the right care products and never skimp on conditioning treatments.

TOP TIP

For a quick lift in a hurry use 4 or 5 jumbo velcro rollers around the crown and front of hair. Spritz with styling lotion and blast with hairdryer for 2 mins. Lightly spray with hairspray and blast with dryer for 30/40 seconds. Remove rollers and tease into shape with fingers.
