GET WHAT YOU WANT - HAIR DYES UPLUGGED

YOU WANT -

RICHER, SHINIER, GLOSSIER VERSION OF THE COLOUR YOU ALREADY HAVE

A semi-permanent colour is best here. Try Wella Viva Colour Mousse at around £3.99 or a tone-on-tone colourant such as Laboratories Garnier Movida at around £5. These work best on mousy or mid-shades of brown, and last about 6-8 shampoos. Longer lasting semi's are available (about 24 shampoos) check the box first. Neither product contains ammonia so will not lighten hair or cover grey but will fade out with no regrowth.

YOU WANT -

A VIBRANT BURST OF COLOUR FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY

Try a temporary wash in- wash out rinse such as Wella Shaders and Toners at around £1.20. The will only coat the hair shaft, not penetrate and last until you next wash your hair. They leave hair really silky and do not damage hair. They leave hair really silky and do not damage hair - not to be used on bleached blonde hair though.

YOU WANT -

OVER ALL COLOUR IN A LIGHER OR DARKER SHADE

You can use a permanent dye such as Clairols Nice and Easy around £5.00 or Recital Colour at around £6.00. These will alter shade quite dramatically and will last until you grow them out or dye over them. Modern formulations are not too harsh on the hair and can make hair really shiny. They often come with a special after care conditioner, essential for de-tangling if you hair is a bit dry. Regrowth will need touching up every few weeks - follow the instructions for root regrowth.

TOP TIP
TOP TIP - If you need to tie up long hair while in the bath, twist it gently into a loop and clip ends on top of head. If you pull it into a pony tail with a band, the steam from the bath will cause a 'kink' where the band has been when you let it down again.

Did You Know?

DID YOU KNOW?

DID YOU KNOW - That the new semi permanents can last up to 24 shampoos. That is three and a half weeks if you wash your hair every day!

PROBLEM SOLVING

STATIC - Electricity build up between brush and fine hair.

TRY - Using hairspray on your brush or smoothing a small amount of wax onto ends.

FLAKY SCALP - Often caused by central heating, can be stress related, or caused by product build up.

TRY - Massaging in hot oil treatment or if you know you have been heavy on the styling products lately, give the hair a rest from these.

DRY ENDS - Common in longer hair it can be due to sebum not reaching the ends of your hair.

TRY - Applying a spray conditioner to the ends of the hair or use a leave-in conditioner making sure you comb it right to the ends. If the ends are splitting its time for a trim.

OILY SCALP - Due to overactive sebaceous glands.

TRY - A herbal shampoo or one labelled 'clarifying' shampoo and do not be tempted to massage too vigorously - this will stimulate glands further. Use one of the new hair fresheners in between washes to avoid oily smelling hair.

SECRETS TO SHINY HAIR
  • Serum is good for curly hair as curly hair does not reflect light as well as straight hair. Use on wet hair before styling or sparingly on dry hair between washes.
  • Cold rinse your hair quickly after washing to flatten the cuticle. Natural light will reflect off a smooth surface much better than a rough one.
  • Temporary colour livens up all shades and modern formulas are designed to add shine. Choose a shade closest to your own hair for the most shine.
  • Shine spray will give an all-over gloss and is a great favourite with TV personalities as the camera catches the light. Spray on evenly about ten inches away from hair.
