RED, IRRITATED SKIN?
If your skin is hyper sensitive it really is worth investing in good skin products. A good quality product will have less of the ingredients which irritate the skin. For an anti-redness day cream try Decleor’s Harmonie Jour. It soothes and protects irritated skin and reduces redness. Not cheap at around £30 for 50 ml but worth every penny to sufferers. And remember no amount of makeup will look good if the skin underneath is unhappy!

HOW TO………
GET BEAUTIFUL HANDS

  • Wash your hands using a soap free liquid cleanser.
  • Exfoliate the backs of hands and knuckles with gentle scrub formula.
  • Whilst hands are still damp massage in a small amount of olive oil.
  • Heat some low melting point paraffin wax (available at chemists) in a plastic bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water.
  • After checking the temperature, spread wax over hands with a pastry brush and leave to harden. Add several more layers in the same way.
  • Wrap hands in a warmed towel and leave for 5 mins before peeling off.
  • Buff nails with a soft cloth or nail buffer.

DE-STRESS YOUR FEET!

Soothe your tired, aching feet with a once a week treat that will make them look prettier and help relieve stress.

  1. Add a few drops of peppermint oil to a bowl of warm water and soak feet for about 10 minus. Relax, listen to music or read your favourite book, then gently pat dry.
  2. Massage in some foot balm using a circular motion on the soles and long smoothing strokes upwards over the foot and ankle.
  3. Treat yourself to a foot roller for an easy way to massage your feet. (Body Shop around £3). Simply roll it back and forth under your feet for instant relief.

FOR LIPSTICK THAT STAYS PUT

Create a base with your foundation. Line your lips with a neutral lip liner so the colour won’t bleed into tiny lines. Using a lip brush to apply lipstick will help it to last longer. Apply one coat, blot with a tissue then brush on final coat. To ‘plump up’ your lips, apply a pearl lipstick as your second coat over your usual first coat cover, then highlight just the arch of top lip and central part of lower lip with pearly gloss.

Do I really need a toner?

No! Alcohol, which is found in most toners, is one of skins enemies. It dries out the skin and upsets it’s natural balance. Instead, try gentle Rosewater, or a ‘freshener’ and always check for no-alcohol content. (Try Liz Earles Instant Boost Skin Tonic.

How often should I moisturise?

Twice a day, morning and evening. Whatever cleansing routine you use you will always need to follow with moisture. If you find that moisturisers leave you feeling a bit greasy, look out for a ‘re-hydrating’ formula, which will add moisture and re-hydrate the skin without adding oil.

Can you suggest a treatment for the occasional spots I get?

We love the Body Shops Tea Tree Oil Blemish Stick. It’s easy to apply and Tea Tree is well known for it’s healing and antiseptic qualities.

Do skincare products have a sell by date?

Yes. For most products the shelf life unopened is 2-3 years but once opened you have about 12 months of use. This is usually less for sensitive skin products or natural products as they have few or no preservatives in them. Beauty products should be kept in a cool, dark place – a drawer maybe. Although they look nice on the bathroom windowsill, they will be affected by sunlight and temperature changes.

I always apply 2 coats of mascara as recommended but should I wait for the first coat to dry before applying the second?

Make-up artists recommended that you apply the second coat just before the first coat is dry, but say that using one of the latest thickening, lengthening types that really one coat should be enough.

(Try S-T-R-E-T-C-H by Max Factor or Luxurious by Yves St Laurent).

Why does my eyeshadow keep creasing?

The best way to avoid ‘creases’ is to blend foundation all over eyelid to create an even base (you could use one specially designed for oily skin, even if you don’t need it on your face). Follow with a powder eyeshadow in a neutral shade to ‘fix’ it before applying your chosen colour.
